7 time iron man finisher, 30 time marathon finisher
I am not an endurance athlete. I like to hike and I did run a half marathon once in university. I even got 3rd place in my age category, not to shabby! However, my brain and body are not built for endurance activities. I am ok with this. Thankfully, I love surfing and skiing and am happy with long walks and sprint training for cardio. And glute training. I can never get enough of that.
Despite not having a personal interest in a sport or activity, I deeply appreciate anyone who is dedicated to performing their best at something, even if it is not one of my passions. As a coach and stretch therapist, it becomes my passion when it is my honor to work with them to overcome pain and injury or simply seeking to improve their performance.
Elaine Reid is one of those who have instilled their passion in me. Her work ethic and dedication to her training regime and goals is simply inspiring.
She is a 7 time Iron Man finisher and has raced in over 30 marathons. She is an ultimate weekend warrior, working as both a dental hygienist, a personal trainer and cycling coach in addition to her training regime.
She and I met at Rep One Fitness where we both see clients. She was interested in what stretch therapy could do for her body and for her performance.
My goal was to improve her hip range of motion to improve her stride length and decrease lower back discomfort. In addition to opening up her upper body and improving her overhead shoulder mobility, I also wanted her glutes to become better developed. Their lack of strength and her hamstring dominance was robbing her of speed and contributing to SI issues.
Our sessions and her independent exercises consisted of a combination of stretch therapy, specific mobility drills for during her workout warm up,tons and tons of isolated glute development and improving her squat depth and strength.
It has been an awesome journey. I have loved every second, especially seeing her squat depth and strength improve despite a heavy cycling and running schedule.
Here are her thoughts on her training and racing as well as our work together.
“After completing 7 Ironman events and 30 marathons, it isn’t unusual for people to ask me what it is about training and racing that keeps me coming back for more.
For me, race day is the icing on the cake. This day is the culmination of all my hard work, pushing my body to limits I never thought possible. I always tell people that if you want to race an Ironman or a marathon, you have to enjoy the training.
Training for Ironman opened up a whole new world for me in terms of cycling. I love the opportunity to explore new routes and I like to take advantage of the many fantastic rides we have on West Coast such as: The Canada Day Ride, STP, Axel Merckx and GranFondo Whistler just to name a few.
For years I knew I had a lazy ass but it wasn’t until I started working with Christina that I finally learned how to use my butt! Christina’s thorough and methodical approach helped me to improve my range of motion before we worked on increasing my strength. With the combination of personal training and stretch therapy I now know my body better than ever. I feel stronger riding and running and I’m squatting deeper than I ever thought possible – thank you Christina!”

To perform at our best and to do amazing things with our bodies, we need a solid foundation of quality movement, symmetry and strength. When we respect these foundations and take time to develop them, our body responds with not only amazing work output but feels great while we work towards our goals.
